FileMaker 7 Migration Case StudiesIntroductionWhen FileMaker, Inc. premiered powerful new features in FileMaker 7,
developers began to address the question of how to take advantage of all
FileMaker 7 has to offer while maintaining the functionality and features of their
established solutions. Some believed that conversion offered the best
hope for a successful migration to the new version. Others believed that
a complete rewrite from scratch was their only option. The real answer lay
somewhere in the middle.
New Millennium, a FileMaker Solutions Alliance Partner
member, developed a strategy based
on four simple concepts: Convert, Restore, Extend, and Consolidate. Together with other FSA Partner and Associate level members, New Millennium
produced an extensive document outlining this strategy, published by FileMaker,
Inc. in April 2004, which led numerous developers through successful migrations.
The following case studies tell the stories of some of these migrations…how
different developers discovered, analyzed, and overcame significant challenges.
The subjects are a diverse group with different business models, different
levels of solution complexity, and different desired outcomes. They are
real developers with real solutions who encountered real questions and
problems. Using New Millennium’s services and tools, each was able to
achieve the same result: successful, working FileMaker 7 solutions
and effective migration to the FileMaker 7 family.
